Our History

Bredon OBA was started in 1976 by Mr Richard St Aubrey Davis of Bredon’s Norton.  Richard went to Gordonstoun School in Scotland.  The Headmaster, Kurt Hahn, was a great believer that pupils at Gordonstoun should be exposed to adventure, sport and assisting the local community in addition to their academic studies.  In 1941 Kurt Hahn, in partnership with Lawrence Holt of the Blue Funnel shipping line started Outward Bound to provide training for new recruits to the merchant navy who would be exposed to great danger during the war years.  Outward Bound continued after the war and has grown to be the premier outdoor adventure organisation in the UK.

Richard believed that all youngsters would benefit from an Outward Bound course and he decided to set up an Association in the Bredon parish which would raise funds through a 200 club to provide financial assistance for youngsters who wanted to go on courses.

Richard personally recruited the first 200 club members from residents of the parish.  The first three youngsters from Bredon went on courses in 1977.

Up to now over 285 courses have been supported by the Association.
